Counseling
About Me
I have not always been a therapist. The path to becoming one has led me through seemingly unrelated experiences necessary in the discovery of who I am and what my passions are. Nineteen years in various fields of business, computers and management helped to clarify that working with and supporting the people around me meant everything.
Following the birth of my son, I committed myself to creating a life of "work" I loved, not just to improve the core quality of my life, but to model its possibility for my son. After getting my Masters degree in Counseling in 2008, I spent years providing therapy in various community mental health settings, primarily with adults and families of limited means.

More recently, I have spent 7+ years as a therapist in University settings working with students of all ages as they navigate the many transitions associated with independence, adulthood, relationships, career changes, and all the mental health challenges accompanying their life journeys. I have seen much. I remain awed by the inherent beauty and wisdom in each of us as well as by the challenges we all face as we create lives of deep personal meaning.

I am happily married to an amazing woman and have a grown son of 24 who is far more mature than I was at his age. I love spending time with them and with finding excuses to do woodworking, but also revel in getting time alone on my favorite wild and isolated rivers.

My passion.... is to help you discover and connect more deeply with who you are and assist you in identifying and navigating beyond the obstacles interfering with living your best life.
My Approach
My favorite thing about counseling is the opportunity it provides to slow down and approach life with intentionality.

My first step is compassionate and focused listening, to get to know you, what you are experiencing, and what you want to change, transform, or create. Together, we’ll identify your goals as well as your underlying values... as these act as an important "compass" with which we make conscious life choices.

I use approaches with a proven track record of success in helping people
These include…
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
-
Internal Family Systems
-
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques
-
EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
While talk is an important part of therapy, the development of certain skills and practices may be needed to create positive actions and strategies. I may encourage you to practice these between sessions so that we can continue to refine and develop those skills.
My hope is that our time together will provide a brief respite, and a safe space for you to be seen, heard, and encouraged in your journey.
